The CLT - Exterior is a one-day, hands-on exam. ALCA has licensed the CGKA to administer the test in Connecticut. Candidates choose to test in Installation, Maintenance or Irrigation. The CLT Exterior Exam is currently available in many US States and all Canadian provinces. Certification is standardized in most aspects, and is reciprocally accepted between all licensed states.
Who should take the CLT - Exterior exam? Any Exterior Technician who wants to establish credentials by meeting national standards for safe and effective operation of machinery and by demonstrating a thorough understanding of all facets of the position. The test provides hands on testing and written tests. The written tests are offered at different times of the year, during our annual conference, and also at the annual CLT test in October at the UCONN campus. If you own a company, this test will solidify your foundation of quality services with credentials. If you are looking for employment in the green industry, certification will make you more marketable, and help command a higher salary compared to other applicants.
Connecticut currently tests for Installation or Maintenance (not irrigation at this time). Certification applicants are all tested for common core components, relevant to both landscaping installation and maintenance. This includes written examinations on safety, first aid, general comprehension and landscape plan reading. They are further tested for competency in the chosen module. For maintenance this includes safe operation of mowing, trimming, and other lawn maintenance equipment. For installation, applicants need to be proficient in the use of a transit, installation of pavers, plant layout, grading, tractor operation and more!
